Jacques Kallis Records That May Never Be Broken
Jacques Kallis was one of South Africa’s greatest cricketers. He was a top-order batter who scored 13,289 Test runs at an average of 55.37. He made 45 Test hundreds. He also took 292 Test wickets. Then there were the 200 catches, most of them taken at slip.
In ODIs, Kallis scored 11,579 runs and took 273 wickets. Across all international cricket, he finished with 25,534 runs and 577 wickets.
From 1995 to 2014, Kallis batted near the top, bowled seam and fielded in the slips. South Africa used him in all three roles for most of that time.

Kallis made 45 Test hundreds and averaged 55.37, numbers that would have made him a great batter even if he had never bowled. Kallis usually came on after South Africa’s frontline quicks. He could hold an end, make the batter play and give the main bowlers a rest. When the pitch offered movement, he could take wickets as well.
A long innings could be followed by a spell of seam bowling, then several hours at slip. Most fast-bowling all-rounders eventually bowl less, miss matches or move down the order. He still finished with 292 Test wickets, only eight short of 300.

Franchise cricket takes up more of the calendar, and teams now manage fast-bowling workloads more carefully. A top-order batter who also bowls seam is likely to be rested more often or have his bowling reduced. Kallis kept his top-order place and continued bowling for most of his career.
Ben Stokes has repeatedly had to reduce his bowling because of injuries. Ravindra Jadeja has spent most of his career too low in the order to chase Kallis’ run tally. Shakib Al Hasan played all three formats but did not accumulate the same volume of Test and ODI runs. Kallis played a lot of Test and ODI cricket, and South Africa kept using him with both bat and ball.
South Africa’s Leading Run-Scorer in Tests and ODIs
He remains South Africa’s leading run-scorer in both Tests and ODIs. His batting record alone would have made him a South African great. He was patient, technically sound and difficult to remove once set. He did not always score at the pace spectators wanted, but South Africa valued the stability he gave the innings.
The bowling was not there to rescue an ordinary batting record. It came on top of a great one.
Some all-rounders were better bowlers, and others were more attacking batters. None of them matched Kallis’ combination of 13,289 Test runs, 292 Test wickets and 273 ODI wickets.
