Top 10 IPL Records That May Never Be Broken
The IPL is very different from the tournament that began in 2008. Batters score faster, squads are deeper and there are more matches. Yet a few IPL records still look untouched. Teams now study every player in detail. Overseas players are rotated, senior players are moved on sooner, and hardly anyone keeps the same role for twenty years. After IPL 2026, these ten IPL records still look the hardest to break.
1. Virat Kohli – 973 Runs in a Single Season
Virat Kohli scored 973 runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2016 IPL season. He reached that total in 16 matches, with four centuries and seven fifties. No one has seriously threatened it since.
A batter chasing 973 cannot afford two or three quiet matches. There is too little time to make up the lost runs. He also needs to open, stay fit and reach the playoffs. Without the extra matches, the record is almost out of reach. Openers are now expected to attack from the first over, so they get fewer chances to build long innings. Kohli scored 675 runs in 2026 and still fell 298 short of his 2016 total.
2. Chris Gayle – 175 Not Out
Chris Gayle’s unbeaten 175 against Pune Warriors in 2013 remains the highest individual score in IPL history. He made those runs from 66 balls, hitting 13 fours and 17 sixes. Royal Challengers Bangalore reached 263, with Gayle scoring almost two-thirds of the team’s total.
Gayle opened and batted through the innings. The pitch suited him, the boundaries were short and Pune never found a way to stop him.
Teams now switch quickly to wide yorkers, slower balls and packed boundary fields when a batter gets going. Even when teams score 220 or 230, the runs are usually shared. One batter may not face enough balls to reach 175. Even 150 would be exceptional. To pass 175, a batter would need to dominate almost the entire innings.
3. Chris Gayle – 30-Ball Century
Gayle reached his century in 30 balls during the same innings. It remains the fastest hundred in IPL history.
To break it, someone must score 100 from 29 deliveries or fewer. The batter has to attack from the first ball and cannot afford a quiet over. Batters attack earlier now, but bowling sides also change their plans much faster. Pune had no time to recover before Gayle reached 100.
4. Yuzvendra Chahal – 233 IPL Wickets
Yuzvendra Chahal finished IPL 2026 with 233 wickets from 188 matches. He remains the IPL’s leading wicket-taker and was also the first bowler to cross 200 wickets in the competition.
Career bowling records are hard in the IPL because a bowler gets only four overs. Batters attack from the start, and one expensive season can push a bowler out of the side. Spinners are studied closely. Batters know their usual lengths and which boundary to target.
Chahal has stayed effective across different teams, grounds and stages of his career. Passing 233 would still take years of regular selection and consistent wicket-taking.
5. MS Dhoni – 205 IPL Wicketkeeping Dismissals
MS Dhoni has completed 205 wicketkeeping dismissals in the IPL. That total consists of 158 catches and 47 stumpings. He remained on 278 matches after not playing in IPL 2026. Dhoni is remembered for his stumpings, but the record came from keeping wicket season after season.
He stayed as CSK’s first-choice keeper for nearly two decades and remained useful enough with the bat to keep his place.
Today, wicketkeepers are judged heavily on their batting. A long loss of form can quickly cost them their place. To get close, a keeper would need a long career, regular selection and bowlers who keep creating chances.
6. MS Dhoni – Five IPL Titles as Captain
MS Dhoni captained Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles. He shares the captaincy record with Rohit Sharma, who also won five titles with Mumbai Indians. Dhoni’s victories came in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. Winning one IPL title is hard. Winning five means surviving several auctions and rebuilding the team more than once.
Successful squads do not stay together for long. Auctions, injuries and one bad playoff match can undo an entire season. Dhoni won with different groups of players and kept CSK competitive through several rebuilds. Captains are also given less time now. Two poor seasons can be enough for a change. A captain cannot reach six without staying in charge of a successful team for many years.
7. Alzarri Joseph – 6 for 12
Alzarri Joseph took six wickets for 12 runs on his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians in 2019. His spell lasted only 3.4 overs and remains the best bowling performance in IPL history. He surpassed Sohail Tanvir’s previous record of 6 for 14. A bowler gets only four overs in a T20 match, which makes six wickets extremely rare.
To beat 6 for 12, someone would need seven wickets or six for fewer runs. Joseph also benefited from a batting collapse. He found movement, hit the right lengths and returned before Sunrisers could recover. Teams now bat deeper, especially with the Impact Player rule, so one bowler is less likely to run through the entire side.
8. Chris Gayle – 357 IPL Sixes
Chris Gayle hit 357 sixes during his IPL career. Gayle combined huge power with years at the top of the order. Opening the batting also gave him plenty of balls against both pace and spin.
Many current batters can match him for one season. The problem is doing it for long enough to reach 357. Overseas players compete for only four places and can lose their spot after one poor season. An Indian batter has a better chance, but even 25 sixes a season would take more than 14 years to pass Gayle.
9. Virat Kohli – 283 IPL Matches for One Franchise
Virat Kohli has now played 283 IPL matches, all for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His 16 appearances in IPL 2026 took him past MS Dhoni’s previous league-high total of 278. That made Kohli the most-capped player in IPL history at the end of the 2026 season.
Kohli joined RCB in 2008 and has stayed through repeated auctions and changes in leadership.
Most players are released, traded or replaced long before that. Someone may eventually play more than 283 matches. Doing it all for one franchise will be much harder.
10. Virat Kohli – 9,336 IPL Runs
Virat Kohli finished IPL 2026 with 9,336 career runs from 283 matches. He entered the season with 8,661 runs and added another 675 in 16 matches. His 2026 campaign included one century and five fifties. Unlike the 973-run season, this total was built over 19 years. Kohli has scored those runs in several roles, from middle order to opener.
A challenger would need to start young and score heavily for more than a decade. Missing one or two seasons could make the gap too large. The total may rise again because Kohli is still playing.
Why These IPL Records May Last
Gayle reached his records through power. Kohli needed one remarkable season and years of consistency. Chahal, Joseph and Dhoni followed completely different paths.
Some of these IPL records will be broken one day. Others may survive simply because players no longer get the same role for that long.
